UPS Hiring Events Scheduled this Month
A series of hiring events are scheduled this month, courtesy of the City of Chicago and Chicago City Colleges, in an effort to fill positions at 11 Chicagoland United Parcel Service (UPS) operating centers including both facilites at the O’Hare International Airport, 616 South Access Rd., the facility at 1400 South Jefferson Street, and the Chicago Area Consolidation Hub at 1 UPS Way in Hodgkins, IL.
The events are being held specifically to facilitate the hiring of more than 300 delivery drivers and tractor-trailer driver positions, according to mayor’s office.
“By bringing together transportation and logistics businesses with Chicago’s trained workforce, we can drive growth in this industry and in the City,” said Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel. “This is an opportunity for UPS to have a direct impact on job creation and growing the Chicago-area economy.”
The first of two pre-scheduled interview days will take place from 9 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18 at Truman College at 1145 W. Wilson Ave. The second event is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 25 at Olive-Harvey College at 10001 S. Woodlawn Ave.
Both hiring events will focus on filling positions for delivery drivers and tractor-trailer drivers. Additional hiring events may be added based on need. Interested candidates should check the UPS jobs website for updates.
Mayor Rahm Emanuel also announced that UPS will create more than 4,000 full-time and part-time seasonal jobs in the Chicagoland area as part of a Fall Hiring Initiative. The openings are for a combination of positions, including package handlers, delivery drivers, tractor-trailer divers and driver helpers. Many seasonal employees will have the opportunity for advancements into permanent positions following the 2014 holiday season.
According to the mayor’s office, it’s estimated that more than 110,000 transportation, distribution and logistics jobs are expected in the Chicago region over the next decade. Chicago’s transportation, distribution, and logistics industry accounts for over $20 billion in GRP and 185,000 jobs.
The industry is estimated to add jobs at twice the rate of the overall economy through 2020. Estimates suggest that between a quarter and a third of all freight tonnage in the U.S. originates, terminates or passes through the region.
To prepare students for in-demand careers in ground, air, and rail transport, multi-modal distribution and logistics, in February 2012, Mayor Emanuel along with Gov. Quinn and City Colleges of Chicago Chancellor Cheryl Hyman announced the construction of a Transportation, Distribution and Logistics (TDL) Center at Olive-Harvey College, the first comprehensive TDL education center in the state.
“Through our College to Careers plan, City Colleges is working with UPS and other leaders in the TDL sector to prepare Chicagoans to seize the 110,000 jobs coming to our region in this field over the next decade,” said Chancellor Cheryl Hyman. “Not only do we offer a revamped TDL curriculum at Olivec-Harvey, but we are fortunate to work with employer partners who are providing real-world learning and career opportunities such as this.”
All qualified candidates interested in applying for full-time delivery driver and tractor-trailer driver positions must pre-register by calling 708-387-4683, Monday thru Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
