CBA Meeting Focuses on Health Care Insurance for Small Businesses
The Chatham Business Association’s (CBA) monthly membership meeting at the QBG Foundation Building, 806 E. 78th St., on Oct. 14, highlighted health benefits and services available to small businesses under the Affordable Care Act (ACA).
Signed into law by U.S. President Barack Obama on March 23, 2010, the ACA made affordable health care more accessible to all Americans, altered business practices and procedures for insurance companies, and caused sweeping reforms for how businesses, both small and large, handle their employees’ health insurance policies.
Shawn Dorgan, Director of Channels at Land of Lincoln Health, a CBA member, spoke on how affordable health care benefits small businesses and the role Land of Lincoln Health plays in assisting small businesses throughout the state of Illinois purchase the right insurance plan.
“We actually work quite a bit with the Chatham Business Association, [CBA Executive Director] Melinda Kelly has been on our board of directors since we formed as a company in Jan. 2013 so we work almost exclusively with the Chatham Business Association here on the south side of Chicago because many people enrolled in health insurance including the African American population,” Dorgan told the Chicago Citizen Newspaper.
Land of Lincoln Health is the first and currently the only non-profit co-op health insurance company in the state. It is governed by a board of directors made up of its customers according to Dorgan.
Dennis Foldenauer, Economic Development Specialist, Small Business Administration (SBA) Illinois District Office, discussed during the meeting, how SBA helps small businesses understand the intricacies of the ACA.
We have the people on the ground to do the trainings like this and that’s something our staff is doing every day around the country,” said Foldenauer.
Created in 1953, the U.S. Small Business Administration is an independent agency of the federal government to aid, counsel, assist and protect the interests of small business concerns, to preserve free competitive enterprise and to maintain and strengthen the overall economy of our nation according to its website.
“What we want to make sure is that you know that we’re here to help,” said CBA Executive Director Melinda Kelly at the conclusion of the meeting to the membership. Kelly also emphasized the value of working with local health care brokers when shopping for health care insurance for small businesses.
