The entire CTA Harrison Red Line station was temporarily closed for the second of five upcoming weekend-only closures, because of repairs being made to the stop. The next temporary weekend closure of the station is scheduled to begin at 10 p.m. Friday, May 16 and end at 4 a.m. Monday, May 19.

“Late July early August is when all the work in that area [will] be [completed],” said Catherine Hofinsky, CTA spokesperson. “The work we’re performing is deeper structural work as well as enhances the appearance of the station.”

The $10 million rehabilitation project will make the 70-year old station brighter, cleaner and safer travel environment for the 1.4 million people who use it each year. Overall project work includes building two main entrance canopies, waterproofing to reduce pooling of water in mezzanine and platform areas; installation of new granite flooring; new lighting; and repairs to all three station stairways.

To access Red Line service during this time, customers can either walk or board a #29 State bus to the nearby Jackson or Roosevelt stations, which are each a half mile or less from Harrison.

The main entrance to the station will re-open in time for the morning rush period on Monday.

The Polk Street entrance; however, has been temporarily closed since April 14 but will re-open May 26. Currently, crews continue to perform deeper structural work on the south end of the station.

“Following the closure of the Polk entrance, we will then have to close the main entrance facing Harrison Street and that, too, will be closed for 42 days so you’re looking at July 28 when that will re-open,” said Hofinsky.

The rehabilitation of the Harrison Red Line station is part of a larger $92 million transportation investment in the Near South Side announced late last summer by Mayor Emanuel and CTA President Forrest Claypool. Other transportation improvement projects included in this investment are the rehabilitation of the Orange Line’s 18th Street Connector – a half-mile stretch of elevated structure that carries Orange Lines trains traveling to/from the Loop; the new Cermak-McCormick Place Green Line station currently under construction; Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) improvements to Roosevelt Road and the recently reconstructed auxiliary entrance at the Roosevelt CTA station.
