Thornton High School Teacher Shot Over the Weekend
A Thornton High School mathematics teacher who was shot over the weekend, remained hospitalized as of Monday, recovering from a gunshot wound to the back, according to a spokesperson for Thornton High School District 205.
Mathematics teacher, Michael Brown, of Flossmoor, Ill., reportedly was driving his car through Harvey when he crashed into a parked vehicle near 154th Street and Ashland Ave. on Saturday.
Harvey police discovered Brown after approaching his vehicle, but reportedly did not know where the shot was fired from or whether Brown was the intended target, according to a Northwest Indiana Times news report.
Harvey police reportedly are searching for the person who fired the gun.
Brown was taken Saturday night to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, Ill., in serious condition.
Jerry Doss, a spokesman for Thornton Township High School District 205, said Brown is recovering from his wound, and that school officials are hopeful he will return to his job in the near future.
Brown has been a mathematics teacher at Thornton for about 15 years, and was one of Doss’ teachers when he was a Thornton High student in the late 1990s.
“He was a phenomenal teacher,” Doss said of Brown.
Brown’s classes are being staffed this week by a counselor, Doss said.
Glenn Harston, another spokesman for the district, said school officials set up crisis centers at Thornton High School where students or staff can receive counseling to cope with the shooting. Harston also said that the centers would remain open as long as they were needed.
Consisting of Thornridge High School in Dolton, Thornwood High School in South Holland and Thornton Township High School in Harvey, District 205 has been plagued with trouble, such as former president, Kenneth Williams’ removal as Thornton Township High School District 205 board president in Oct., due to a prior felony on his record. Following that incident, his replacement, Ray Banks, was barred from starting work after board members filed a temporary restraining order in March, arguing the selection process was flawed.
A security guard at Thornwood High School in South Holland tragically, died after falling against a locker while trying to break up a fight at the school last year.
