A South Side bank was robbed Tuesday morning but no injuries were reported. The FBI is offering a reward for information leading to the identification and arrest of the person who committed the act.

According to information provided by Special Agent, FBI spokesperson, Joan Hyde, the Seaway Bank main branch at 645 East 87th Street, was robbed just before 11 a.m. by a man witnesses described as a black male, approximately 6 feet tall, wearing a black coat, black hat and black gloves.

It is not known whether or not a weapon was involved in the Seaway Bank robbery or how much money the robbery got away with.

A picture of the bank robber was captured by bank surveillance cameras and was uploaded to the FBI’s BanditTrackerChicago.com web site.

When asked if bank robbers are becoming more brazen, Hyde responded, “While there has been no noticeable change in the degree of aggressiveness of robbers in Chicago, recent suburban robbers have more often been displaying weapons and acting in a more aggressive manner as they carry out their heists.”

In Dec. three suspects allegedly staged a takeover robbery at a south suburban, Homewood Bank of America branch that resulted in a four-hour manhunt involving FBI, local police.

Claudette Harris, Seaway Bank's Marketing Officer, said the bank had no comment on the robbery.

According to the FBI, around 10:30 a.m., Dec. 4, two armed robbers entered the Bank of America branch announced a stickup, got their cash, and fled on foot, joined by an accomplice outside, according to a CBS news report. All three men were later captured.

Last year there were 122 bank robberies in the Chicago area and 13 this year so far.

Since the 1930s, the FBI has had a primary role in bank robbery investigations. In 1934, it became a federal crime to rob any national bank or state member bank of the Federal Reserve. The law soon expanded to include bank burglary, larceny, and similar crimes, with jurisdiction delegated to the FBI who work alongside local law enforcement.

The FBI works around the globe. In addition to their Washington, D.C., headquarters, they have 56 field offices located in major cities throughout the U.S., approximately 380 smaller offices called resident agencies in cities and towns across the nation, and more than 60 international offices called “legal attachés” in U.S. embassies worldwide.

Anyone with information about the Seaway Bank robbery or the other robberies described on the BanditTrackerChicago, website, is asked to call the Chicago office of the FBI at 312-421-6700 or local law enforcement.
