Public Speaking Symposium at South Suburban College

“…One hundred years later, the life of the Negro is still sadly crippled by the manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination. One hundred years later, the Negro lives on a lonely island of poverty in the midst of a vast ocean of material prosperity. One hundred years later, the Negro is still languished in the corners of American society and finds himself an exile in his own land…”
to former U.S. Senator, now President Barack Obama’s keynote speech during the 2004 Democratic National Convention,
“…Tonight we gather to affirm the greatness of our nation - not because of the height of our skyscrapers, or the power of our military, or the size of our economy. Our pride is based on a very simple premise, summed up in a declaration made over two hundred years ago: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, and that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights…life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness…”
These great speakers delivered captivating words that still move us today.

Do you have a fear of public speaking? If so, you certainly are not alone. Glossophobia or speech anxiety is very common. That is why the Chicagoland Speakers Network is helping area residents overcome their uneasiness with speaking publicly, during its Second Annual Public Speaking Symposium.

The great orators of our time perfected their oratorical skills by practicing. Of course some of their skills came naturally and perhaps they took evening classes or seminars such as the ones offered by the Chicagoland’s Speaking Symposium.

From Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech:

“…One hundred years later, the life of the Negro is still sadly crippled by the manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination. One hundred years later, the Negro lives on a lonely island of poverty in the midst of a vast ocean of material prosperity. One hundred years later, the Negro is still languished in the corners of American society and finds himself an exile in his own land…”
