UniverSoul Circus Revisits Washington Park
Presented by the Black McDonald’s Operators Association of Chicagoland and the Northwest Indiana (BMOA), the UniverSoul Circus is in Washington Park at 51st and Cottage Grove Ave. from Wednesday, Sept. 18 through Sunday, Oct. 6 and then will move on to Union Park at 1501 W. Randolph St.
The UniverSoul Circus was founded by its’ current Chief Executive Officer Cedric Walker in 1994 in Atlanta, GA. By 1997 the circus had grown to a 10- city tour. Today, the circus performs over 500 shows in over 43 major markets and is the third largest circus in the United States.
The UniverSoul Circus earns its’ name from the high energy interactive style that combines traditional circus performances with theater and Gospel, Classic R&B, Pop, Hip Hop, Jazz and Latin music.
“We consider ourselves a world-wide event, a global event for everybody. We believe that we’ve certainly changed the circus world. Now, you don’t expect to go to a circus and sit there and watch. We want you to become a participant, we want you to interact with the circus,” said Walker. “When you’re standing and clapping and singing and dancing at the same time you’re watching incredible acts of circus. So it’s a great opportunity to come out with the entire family.”
The UniverSoul Circus is making its 19th visit to Washington Park where it has always been received by large crowds, according to Walker.
The UniverSoul Circus hosted a 10-station Circus Camp at Washington Park last week for children free of charge. The camp is a growing, reoccurring event that the UniverSoul Circus donates to the community each time they visit.
During the one day camp, youngsters were able to participate in acrobatics & tumbling, choreography & hip hop yoga, Caribbean dance, limbo and stilt walking, beginner contortion, animals, juggling, high wire, clowning around, arts and crafts, and a ringmaster station (confidence building & public speaking) and were assisted by The Jesse White Tumblers and the South Shore Drill Team.
The UniverSoul Circus will be hosting free in-store mini circus events at BMOA McDonald’s locations throughout the city to be held at the following McDonald’s locations from 3:30 pm to 5:00 pm:
• Tuesday, October 1 at 70 E. Garfield Blvd (55th Street)
• Tuesday, October 15 at 5015 W. Madison.
“It’s been a hard and difficult slog during our incredible 19 years, but I would not change it for the world,” said Walker. “Seeing smiling faces, watching our fans dance, sing and laugh makes it all worthwhile.”
