CHICAGO Illinois Comptroller Judy Baar Topinka recently honored Danielle Green Byrd, an Iraqi war veteran, with an award for being a woman of distinction.

Topinka selected Byrd and three other women from Illinois for the honor. Lieutenant Governor Sheila Simon and Attorney General Lisa Madigan also picked four women apiece, recognizing their professional and community accomplishments, during a Womens History Month celebration at the James R. Thompson Center.

Danielle is a remarkable young woman, said Topinka of the Chatham veteran. I appreciate her commitment to the community and dedication to serving our state and country.

Specifically, Comptroller Topinka recognized Danielle Green Byrd, an Iraqi war veteran, who lost her left arm when two rocket propelled grenades hit the area she was guarding. Undeterred, she returned to Chicago, and almost four years after her injuries, graduated with a masters degree in school counseling.

The celebration kicked off Womens History Month, and highlighted the courage, creativity and diligence of the honorees. The state constitutional officers detailed the accomplishments of each honoree, and presented plaques to commemorate the occasion.
