On Monday, Mayo Clinic released an update on U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson, Jr.s condition. The news release said that the congressman is undergoing treatment for Bipolar II depression at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. and is responding well to the treatment and regaining his strength.

The release defines Bipolar II disorder as a treatable condition that affects parts of the brain controlling emotion, thought and drive and is most likely caused by a complex set of genetic and environmental factors. Congressman Jackson underwent bariatric surgery in 2004, specifically a duodenal switch. This type of surgery is increasingly common in the US and can change how the body absorbs food, liquids, vitamins, nutrients and medications.

According to the release, Jackson has asked Mayo Clinic to distribute the information on his behalf and his family remain grateful for support and prayers offered and received on his behalf. There is no timetable detailed for another update on Jacksons condition.

The congressmans wife Chicago 7th Ward Alderman Sandi Jackson met with reporters on Thursday and said she believes her husband will be back to work at some point but it will be the doctors decision.

My hope is that he will come back, Ald. Jackson said. All of that is depending on the doctors. Im encouraged by what theyve been saying to me thus far. Doctors are very conservative and I respect them because they are experts in this field.

Ald. Jackson added that her family is taking the situation one day at a time and are gearing up for Congressman Jacksons ensuing return.

We here on the ground are preparing for his eventual return, she said. We dont know when that is going to be but he wants his constituents to know that they are very much on his mind. He loves them all very much and is very grateful for their support and wants them to know he wouldnt take their support for granted.

Ald. Jackson said she will continue to monitor her husbands progress and any important information will be released by Mayo Clinic.

We are going to leave his return to the experts. I am going to be calling them daily as I do to hear their analysis and when there is a big announcement to be made Mayo will be making them.

Jackson began medical leave on June 10 and entered Mayo Clinic July 25.
