University of Chicago (U of C) students are being urged to stay cautious after three of their fellow students and a Hyde Park resident were robbed at gun point.

On Oct. 9, in what appears to be a string of random attacks, a student was robbed at gun point of his personal belongings in an alley near 52nd St. between Kimbark and Kenwood. The crime occurred at around at 8:35 p.m.

Hours later another robbery occurred on 57th and Dorchester St., at 11:30 p.m., where two students had their cellular phones stolen at gun point.

Just forty five minutes later at 12:05 a.m., three males, one armed with a handgun, approached a student sitting on a bench near the Main Quadrangle on the U of C campus near University Ave., and took his cellular phone and book bag.

On Oct 10, at 12:37 p.m., another aggravated robbery took place on Hyde Park Blvd. between Harper and Lake Park when two males, one of whom said he had a handgun, took a cell phone from a man walking down the sidewalk.

"The University of Chicago takes every crime in our community seriously. The University of Chicago Police Department works closely with other law enforcement authorities to prevent crimes and to investigate any crimes that have taken place, said Jeremy Manier, a U of C spokesperson.

Crime in the Hyde Park-Kenwood area remains at historically low levels, according to Manier. However U of C continues to work with members of the community to foster vigilance and awareness of ways to keep safe.

There are over 300 emergency phones on the U of C campus. In addition, the University of Chicago Police Department (UCPD) has worked to keep the communities safe for more than 40 years according to their web page. The professionally trained force operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, from 39th to 64th Streets and Cottage Grove Avenue to Lake Shore Drive. The more than 100 state-certified officers have full police powers.

If you have information on any of the U of C robbery cases, please contact the University of Chicago Police Department at 773-702-8181 or contact the Chicago Police Department, Wentworth area detectives at 312-747-8382.
