90 Extra Minutes: The Discussion Continues
It is no secret that Mayor Rahm Emanuel is in favor of extending the public school day in Chicago by 90 additional minutes. In fact Mayor Emanuel, Chicago Public Schools CEO, Jean-Claude Brizard and Chicago Teachers Union president, Karen Lewis have been in talks with each other for weeks trying to come to a resolution on the issue.
On Sept. 26, Dwayne Truss, a member of the South Austin Community Coalition and Carol Johnson, a West side community activist, chimed in on the matter by organizing a public town hall meeting at Greater St. John Bible Church at 1256 N. Waller Ave.
For over two hours, community members voiced their concerns about the lengthened school day that has already been implemented at three of Austins nine area public schools. Representatives from Chicago Public Schools (CPS), Chicago Teachers Union (CTU), and Stand for Children-Illinois were in attendance. John Fountain, a local Austin columnist served as the events mediator.
Lawanda Crayton and Michal Brunson, representing CPS and CTU respectfully were each given five minutes to speak on behalf of their organizations and parents, community members and teachers were given 90 seconds to voice their concerns.
We want our kids educated and thats the bottom line. We have to breakdown and digest what the real issues are. Its not a one size fits all solution said Cynthia Flowers, president of the Black Star Community PTA.
After hearing the concerns from the audience, State Rep. Camille Lilly (78th Dist.) said, I will pay closer attention to how the education dollars are being allocated in Springfield. The world needs to know were making our children competitors for the future.
Results from a survey distributed during the meeting showed that the majority of those who attended the meeting were against the extended school day.
Our children need a better education not just more time. said State Rep., LaShawn Ford (8th Dist.) during the meetings heated discussions.
The next Chicago Board of Education meeting will be held on Oct. 26 at 125 S. Clark St. The meeting begins at 10:00 a.m. and members of the public are welcome to voice their comments during the public participation portion of the meeting. Early arrival is suggested.
