Dr. Robin D. Washington
Name: Dr. Robin D. Washington PT, CRC
Occupation: Assistant Professor at Governors State University in the Department of Physical Therapy
Why she stands out:
Dr. Robin D. Washington recently received the Sylvia Walker Education Award from the National Association of Multicultural Rehabilitation Concerns (NAMRC), an association dedicated to promoting excellence and equity in rehabilitation research, education and practice.
As a young person, Dr. Washington was involved in a serious car accident and her injuries required that she received extensive physical therapy; the treatments inspired her admiration and interest for the physical therapy profession.
As a teenager my mother enrolled me in the Chicago Area Health and Medical Careers Program (CAHMCP) at IIT under the direction of Mr. John Bradley. Involvement in this program opened many doors for me and allowed me to dream, said Dr. Washington.
According to its website, CAHMCP is what educators term a longitudinal intervention or "pipeline" program; that is, it identifies and recruits its participants at a very early point in their academic development and provides successive years of very structured academics, counseling, motivational and financial support until its charges reach their long-range career goalGraduation with the doctorate in one of the MODVOPPPP professions (medicine, osteopathy, dentistry, veterinary science, optometry, pharmacy, podiatry, and public health).
Today, Dr. Washington works closely with individuals in physical therapy and assists them with meeting their everyday functioning goals.
Over the years, Dr. Washington has volunteered with many organizations. She is a member of the church based Acts of Faith organization comprised of 11 churches on the South Side of Chicago which focuses on issues related to disparities within the African American community.
In addition Dr. Washington frequently volunteers at various children related health fairs. She currently serves on the Health Ministry board at her church.
When you have a passion for what you are doing, you find time to make things happen, stated Dr. Washington.
