Ald. Jackson Meets With 7th Ward
by Thelma Sardin
Seventh Ward Alderman Sandi Jackson recently met with constituents during a Community Resource Meeting that was held May 18 at Powell School, 7511 S South Shore Dr.
Keiana Barrett, the aldermans chief of staff told the Citizen the meeting was an opportunity for Ald. Jackson to serve as a conduit of information for her constituents.
Ald. Jackson hosts the meetings 2-3 times a year, according to Barrett. The aldermans team scouts locations that are centrally located and friendly for residents to access.
The meetings serve as a forum; several city agencies attend and provide information to residents.
Barrett said the central theme of the meetings are empowering constituents through information and education and allows them to ask questions about city services.
Ald. Jackson usually provides a State of the Ward address and provides constituents with key updates on 7th Ward projects.
Community members are able and encouraged to speak with city agencies. The purpose of the meetings is to help constituents feel empowered to enhance their communities, Barrett said.
Barrett said 24 city agencies attended the May 18th event. She also mentioned that a sprinkling of state agencies were also present. The chief of staff said that agencies from other levels of government are asked to attend because the alderman realizes that her constituents concerns do not only rest with city agencies but also state and federal. The Cook County Assessors office and Congressman Jesse Jackson, Jr.s office was also in attendance.
Barrett cited that a huge advantage of the community resources meetings is the ability for seniors to receive pertinent information in one place. Seniors feel many times they are isolated in services they are afforded, she said.
The May 18th meeting was the first for 2011. Barrett said the event drew a substantial turn out.
Ald. Jackson has hosted the meetings for the past 4 years. Barrett said they have been a staple in her tenure as alderman.
