Local Events Help Fight Hunger

On June 25, The Greater Chicago Food Depository (GCFD) will host its 26th Annual Hunger Walk at Soldier Field. The 5K (3.2 miles) Hunger Walk directly benefits the GCFDs network of 650 pantries, soup kitchens and shelters in Cook County, according to its website. The walk begins at 8:15 a.m. and registration opens at 7 a.m. Walkers will head south along the lakefront from Soldier Field toward 31st Street. The walk is scheduled to occur rain or shine. The GCFD has alternative plans in place in the event of inclement weather.
The GCFD was established in 1978 and is a non-profit food distribution and training center. In 2010, the organization dispersed 66 million pounds of non-perishable food and fresh produce, dairy products and meat, the equivalent of 135,000 meals a day, as stated on its website.
According to the Hunger Walks official webpage, it is an annual event to raise funds and awareness for the GCFDs work in the city and network of agencies.
Funds raised from the walk are divided amongst GCFD agencies and help supplement their operational budgets.
On May 14, a GCFD agency, the Greater Roseland West Pullman Food Network (GRWP) will host a Family Fun Day and kick off for GFCDs 26th Annual Hunger Walk. The event is part of GRWPs 10th anniversary celebration. Admission is free and there will be music, food and games.
The GWRP is a non-profit network of food pantries and volunteers are committed to fighting hunger, as stated in a recent press release. The organization works with pantries in the Roseland, West Pullman, and Pullman, Morgan Park, Beverly, Washington Heights and Altgeld Gardens communities.
According to its website, GRWPs mission is to provide a comprehensive response to hunger in communities located on the south side of Chicago through a coordinated network providing food distribution, advocacy and volunteers.
The GRWP Hunger Walk Kick-off and Family Fun Day will be held in the south parking lot of the Sheldon Heights Church of Christ, 11325 S. Halsted Street at 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. on May 14.
