Dixon Holds Community Meeting
On Tuesday evening, 24th Ward Alderman Sharon Denise Dixon held one of her quarterly community meetings at Lawndale Community Academy.
Ald. Dixon invited representatives for several city services. The measure provides accessibility to city services for constituents so that any of their questions or issues can be resolved.
Ald. Dixon says she invites city officials to the meetings so they can help the community.
Tuesdays guests included Chicago Police Commanders from the 4th and 10th districts.
Ald. Dixon said potholes were among the top concerns of constituents in addition to abandoned buildings.
The alderman said the meeting was one of the better community meetings she has had.
On April 5th, Ald. Dixon will be facing former 24th Ward alderman Michael Chandler. Dixon defeated Chandler in 2007 to become the current 24th Ward alderman. Dixon says she is confident and hopeful about the elections outcome.
People see [the] work that weve done. [they] see us moving forward, Ald. Dixon said.
According to the Chicago Board of Elections, on Feb.22, Dixon had 1,783 votes and Chandler received 1,197 votes. The 24th Ward aldermanic race included 18 candidates which set a historic record in Chicago. Out of those eighteen, one candidate needed to receive over 50 percent of the vote. Dixon gained the highest percentage at 20 percent and Chandler came in second with 13 percent.
If she is re-elected, Ald. Dixon has several business and economic ventures planned for the 24th Ward.
The alderman is working to bring, Tossos, an olive oil company to the area. According to Frank Watkins, Chief of Staff for Ald. Dixon says Tossos will bring jobs and hire ex-felons. Additionally, Chicago Waffles and Chicken wants to build a manufacturing plant in the ward. The plant will bring between 100-150 jobs. Watkins assured that the plans are just a sample of what Ald. Dixon has in store for the 24th Ward.
