Illinois Law Now
What is the Illinois law related to living together out of wedlock?
Theres nothing illegal about cohabitation, although some local zoning laws prohibit more than three unrelated people from living together under one roof. A few states do have laws that prohibit fornication and sodomy, but the laws are rarely enforced if the sexual relations are consensual.
A friend (or shall I say former friend) fell down a flight of stairs in my home and has filed a lawsuit for damages. What should I do to protect myself now and in the future?
You can be held legally liable if a visitor to your property has an accident or injury. In most cases, your liability depends on whether your actions caused or contributed to the incident. Right now, you need to contact an attorney who can help you with your defense. The best way to protect yourself from such claims is to do everything possible to make your home safe. Also, make sure you have a valid homeowner's insurance policy with sufficient liability insurance.
Were a young, newly married couple whose parents are pushing us to create an estate plan. Is this really so important at our age?
When youre young and healthy, having an estate plan may seem unnecessary. Its human nature to shy away from facing our own mortality, but the law makes these conversations a necessity. A well-drafted estate plan, which includes a will, trust, and durable health-care power of attorney, can help direct where your assets will go. It should be updated periodically, to reflect your changing financial situation and the addition of children. Your goal should be to make sure your loved ones will be provided for, in accordance with your wishes
