Chicago Hosts NNPA Convention

This year the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA) will host its annual summer conference in Chicago. The four day event will be held at The Drake Hotel located on the citys Magnificent Mile. The conference will be held from June 22-25.
Scheduled guests include Rev. Jesse L. Jackson Sr. and Rev. Al Sharpton.
Legendary soul group, The Temptations is expected to perform at the conferences awards gala on June 24.
NNPA is a 71 year old organization known for its media coverage from the African American perspective.
According to BlackPressUSA.com, NNPA serves as the industrys news service supplying its member papers with Congressional coverage, stories from other member papers and international and domestic briefs among a few.
The NNPA has an alliance of more than 200 Black owned newspapers and over 1.5 million readers, according to its website.
Additionally, NNPA has a nonprofit organization, the NNPA Foundation, which was found in the 1970s.
The foundation has customarily focused on pre-professional training and encouraging excellence in the newspaper industry.
The foundations four traditional programs include: the Black Press Archives and Hall of Fame at Howard University, the A. Phillip Randolph Messenger Awards for Excellence in publishing and reporting, a summer internship program, and a scholarship fund providing financial assistance to undergraduate and graduate journalism students.
According to the NNPA website, in 2000, the foundation created the Black Press Institute (BPI) and the NorthStar Center for Civic Journalism as a means of revitalizing and enhancing its programmatic activities.
BPI provides college students the opportunity to build their professional portfolios and acumen simultaneously.
According to the NNPA website, BPIs approach is intense and comprehensive. Students are provided with daily training and critiques from journalism professors and professional editors. Interns are also given opportunities to network with ethnic and mainstream media leaders.
Additionally, the Institutes internship programs places an emphasis on Black Press history and the freedom-focused tradition of advocacy journalism.
