General Mills Plans New Ind. Distribution Center
FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) - One of the world's largest food companies plans to open a new distribution center next year in northeastern Indiana.
General Mills Inc. announced Tuesday it would spend $36 million in building the new center in Fort Wayne and potentially add 65 jobs by the end of 2012.
The Minneapolis-based company now has nearly 80 workers at a Fort Wayne distribution center that it leases. The Journal Gazette reports the new 1.5 million square-foot center will be about double the size of the current site.
General Mills vice president Mike Nordstrom says the company picked Fort Wayne for the expansion because of strong relationships with local and state officials and the city's location.
Most of the new jobs would be production positions, which could pay at least $29,000 a year.
