Obit: Eunice M. Thomas
The exciting life of Eunice Mabel began on May 19, 1912 in Vicksburg, Mississippi. She was the seventh child of Ruben and Illinois Christian. She was a star basketball player as she attended Cherry Street elementary and Magnolia High, and finished with honors. Upon completion of high school, she moved to Chicago, Illinois, where Eunice met and married Booker P. Thomas on, August 17, 1946.
Eunice and Booker never bore any natural children, but they were surrogate parents to many nieces, nephews, children of friends, and even opened their doors to many adult friends, as well. Eunice was a hard worker and was employed as a clerk for the Department of Public Aid for more than thirty years. She received the Public Service Award for Outstanding Service in 1982.
Eunice accepted Jesus Christ as her lord and Savior at an early age. Upon moving to Chicago, Eunice joined the Pilgrim Baptist Church, where she served as an usher for many years. At the time of her passing, she was considered a member (in diaspora) of Progressive Community Church, where she dedicated her service to helping the Altar Guild and the Missionary Society.
Eunice was known as a social butterfly. She was instrumental in organizing that fantastic club known as the Fleur de Lis (Flower of the Lily) of Chicago. She was the clubs president for more than forty years. Those dinner dances and cruises abroad will never be forgotten by those who attended.
Eunice will forever be remembered as one who always wanted to help and give to others. She had the gifts of hospitality and giving. A large gathering at Thanksgiving time was what she enjoyed. Sending a meal to others was her specialty. She passed from labor to reward on Sunday, July 17, 2011 at Christ Hospital in Oak Lawn, Illinois, after a brief illness.
Eunice leaves to cherish her memories: a sister; Mrs. Laura Jones of Vicksburg, Mississippi; four nieces, Thelma Push of Vicksburg, Mississippi, Gloria (Solomon) Polk of Hazel Crest, Illinois, Velma Lee (punch of Vicksburg, Mississippi, and Georgene (Norman) Clark of Cleveland, Mississippi; Five nephews, Robert Bonnie,) Marshall of Hazel Crest, Illinois, Leonard [Jackie) Brown of Portland, Oregon, Dr. William (Freeda) Marshall of Flossmoor, Illinois, Charles Marshall of Vicksburg, Mississippi, and John Jones of Vicksburg, Mississippi; a special cousin, Bertha Jasper of Chicago, Illinois, and a host of other relatives and many, many friends.
