Corey Bradford
Occupation: Volunteer Basketball Coach
Why does he stand out?
Bradford volunteers with youth because an individual made a positive impact on his life during his adolescent years.
I had someone when I was a youth to guide me in the right direction, not only in sports but also education, he said.
For the past four years, the 29-year-old has actively volunteered as a basketball coach/ mentor. He currently serves at New Life Covenant Church on Chicagos Southside.
Bradford says he has mentored approximately 20-30 young people over the years.
His coaching and mentoring style incorporates biblical scriptures which provide guidance for the players. According to him, the scriptures help players, a whole lot further, than he could. In addition, he is able to effectively mentor youth because he relates to them.
Bradford says he has witnessed basketball build self-esteem in his players.
The mentor has seen youth end delinquent activity such as selling drugs and gangbanging and as result of his guidance.
Moreover, Bradford says basketball keeps his players safe from danger and crime. [It] allows them to stay focused, he said.
