Rep. Davis Mourns Sister

House Speaker Michael Madigan was among the many guests and dignitaries to pay final respects to Jocelyn McKay Durr, sister of State Representative Monique D. Davis (D-27) on July 8.
A memorial service was held for McKay Durr on Friday evening at Bethany Union Church located in Chicagos Beverly neighborhood.
Jocelyn McKay Durr was born February 10, 1942 in Chicago Illinois, the youngest of James and Constance McKays five daughters. She began her professional career at the University of Chicago, served as a Chicago Police officer, taught special education at Fenger High School and retired as a regional office administrator for Chicago Public Schools.
McKay Durr is survived by her son, Clayton Starks III, three grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and five sisters.
Starks, McKay Durrs only child, thanked attendees for their support. I would like to thank everyone who has given so much love and support for myself and my family, he said surrounded by his three children.
He reassured mourners that he was coping with his mothers loss. I would like to let everyone know that I am ok. My mother prepared me. She talked to me about this whole process, he added.
Dr. Latrice Eggleston, president of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.s Xi Nu Omega chapter; of which Rep. Davis is a member, presented the family with a resolution during the memorial service.
[We]stand to support our faithful and active member Ms. Monique Davis and her family at this time of bereavement; whereas, we comfort our member and her family at the home going services of her sister, Ms. Jocelyn McKay Durr who transition to be with the Lord on July 4, Eggleston read from the resolution.
The deceaseds family was presented with several resolutions including one from Trinity United Church of Christ of which McKay Durr was a member for many years.
McKays Durrs family says she was a great motivator. Rep. Davis said her sister felt strongly about the education of youth and inspired her to embark on a career in state politics. She was mostly interested in the education of our childrenshe motivated me to become a legislator and work on educational issues facing children, Davis told the Citizen.
As a special education teacher at Fenger High School, Davis added that McKay Durr often provided support to many students who faced problems at home.
