Museum Prepares For Annual King Day Festivities
Each year, the DuSable Museum of African American History presents the Dr. King Day Celebration to honor the life of slain civil rights leader, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This year, the museum promises a day filled with live performances, storytelling, films, trunk shows, food and activities for the entire family. The theme for 2011s celebration is COMMUNITY.
Charles Bethea, DuSables Chief Operating Officer and Curator, explained the reasoning behind the celebration of Kings legacy. Hes just one of those iconic figures of the civil rights movement that everyone can gravitate towards. And celebrating his legacy also pays homage to those unknown and other known members of the struggle of civil rights in America, said Bethea.
The King Day Celebration is the one of the main events that kicks off the museums calendar year and is one of the most popular programs. Folks will have an opportunity to see and hear visual arts, performance arts, learn more about the civil rights struggle, learn more about King through lectures and other seminars, he said. According to Bethea, the museum has nearly three thousand visitors during the occasion and Blacks are not the only visitors. Kings work left an imprint on the nation and its beneficial for all ethnicities to learn more about him, because its American History, Bethea added.
The museum cites its role in the community as conserving Black history in a unique way.
Its told by us from a different perspective. The DuSable Museum prides itself on being a truth teller. And what we have a tendency of doing is adding in those elements of history that have always been omitted or lost or taken out of other aspects of the account. A lot of history books gloss over the African American contributions and a lot of other museums gloss over the African American contributions to American history. So we are telling that other side of the history, said Bethea adding, We cant tell the entire story. We can just tell what we can through exhibitions and programs.
DuSables Dr. King Day Celebration is Monday, January 17, 2011 from 10am-5pm. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under. For more information, visit www.dusablemuseum.org.
