About Us
Since the forefront of the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s the Citizen Newspaper Group has remained focused and consistent in the fight for the rights of African-Americans. Weve been dedicated, committed and steadfast with putting national issues in perspective with local situations.
Our responsibility as the Black press is to give the other side of the story. We are committed to giving our community the side of story which is often times forgotten, overlooked or just misunderstood by the mainstream media for whatever reasons.
Timelessly we have come to the rescue of Black leaders and our Black role models when it appeared that the mainstream white media secured their fate in pronounced bashing and degradation. Weve been placed in situation where we have publicly gone head-to-head with this medium on issues from Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas to Heavyweight Champion Mike Tyson. Our community has always supported the fact that there are always two sides and that they can count on Citizen to deliver it.
More importantly, our role with African-American youth has been the central focus. In our involvement with career days, we not only tell of the opportunities available for Blacks, but emphasize the need for them to become entrepreneurs. Citizen has encouraged our youth to continue their education. We have trained, employed and given scholarship monies to ensure that a college education is a reality.
In an effort to continue our investment in society, we invest in ourselves; we invest in market research and circulation audits which support our claim as a viable vehicle that can deliver any message to the pulse of Chicagos Black community.
