Keli Change
Occupation: Graduate Program Assistant, Northwestern University
Why does she stand out?
Keli Change believes that the opportunity to volunteer is a precious gift. Her most recent volunteering role was as a Young Adult Missionary Society coordinator at Martin Temple A.M.E. Zion Church. She performed community outreach activities centered on several issues that plague the Black community such as teenage pregnancy, hunger, and sexually transmitted diseases.
In addition, Change annually participates in fundraising walks for community organizations. She walked for the AIDS Foundation of Chicago for three years and walked last year for the American Diabetes Association. Between the two organizations, she has helped raise approximately $4,000 towards their causes.
I believe that volunteerism is important in the African American community, because for some it is the only exposure they might have to issues that can affect them, she said.
Change said she volunteers to honor those who have made a positive impact on her life.
Volunteering is very dear to me, because there were many people in my life that took time [to] help me and didn't have too. It is my way of paying homage to them and paying it forward at the same time.
