Food Drive In Time For The Holidays
In a fight to help rid hunger on Chicagos South side, the Greater Roseland West Pullman Food Network (GRWP) partnered with State Sen. Emil Jones III (14th Dist.) on Monday and collected food and monetary donations that will help feed hundreds of families on Thanksgiving.
Knowing that more than 100 families wont have to worry about where their Thanksgiving meal is going to come from makes a huge difference, expressed Sen. Jones.
With the help of neighborhood churches and social service agency recommendations, GRWP was able to provide 250 families with turkeys and all the Thanksgiving Day trimmings. Recipe booklets were also offered to those seeking new cooking ideas.
We know its impossible to feed everyone but we would like to feed as many people as we can, especially the ones we know are really in need, said Christina Beatty Goodman, Local Hunger Fellow for the Greater Roseland West Pullman Food Network.
The following non-perishable items were accepted during this years GRWP food drive:
- Cornbread mix
- Cranberry sauce
- Green Beans
- Greens
- Instant mash potatoes
- Macaroni noodles
- Sweet potatoes
The GRWP is a network of ten local food pantries located in Roseland, Pullman, West Pullman, Beverly, Morgan Park and Washington Heights. They provide delivery services to pantries throughout the city as far north as Lakeview.
In addition to providing stationary food distribution, GRWP also operates a mobile food pantry called Pantry on Wheels (POW) delivering food to communities with high food insecurity and a lack of emergency food service providers.
Through the Greater Chicago Food Depository (GCFD), the GRWP and its partner pantries are able to feed approximately 5,000 households and 18,000 individuals per month.
The mission of the GRWP Food Network is to provide a comprehensive response to hunger and to meet human needs in communities located on the South Side Chicago.
