by SheRico Jones
Hyde Park Neighborhood Club is hosting its 48th annual Pancake Breakfast on Sunday May 1st from 8am-2pm. Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle will be flipping pancakes alongside 4th ward Alderman Will Burns and Senator Kwame Raoul; to name a few. Special guests in the past have included President Barack Obama when he was a senator.
[We want to] get a lot of people into the building that dont normally come in on a daily basis, Sarah Diwan, Director of Childhood Programs said. Its an opportunity to show them all the things that we do.
There will be all you can eat pancakes, sausage, bacon, juice and fruit; according to the events coordinator, Maurya Orr. The cost is $8 for adults (ages 14 and over) and $5 for children ages 4-13. For children under the age of three, its free. HPNC will unveil its new logo and 29-passenger bus at the event. There will also be an historic event for HPNCs Tot Lot program.
Im planning to kick off an interactive Tot Lot generation project, Diwan said. This years Pancake Breakfast will be the first day of the project. The goal is to get people who were involved with Tot Lot in previous generations [to] come back to the building and share their memories and how Tot Lot affected their lives both as parents and as children growing up.
Formally called Winter Weekdays Play and Learn program, Tot Lot is an indoor playground for children ages 0-4. It was started in 1947 on an outside playground then moved to HPNC in 1954. On weekdays from October to May 1st parents can bring toddlers out to enjoy a generous assortment of toys and play with other toddlers. There are also other activities such as art and story time. However, it is not a daycare program; all toddlers must be accompanied by an adult.
For more information on Tot Lot contact HPNC at: (773) 645-4062.
The Pancake Breakfast, which starts at 10am-1pm, will include arts and crafts for children and face painting. HPNC is located at 5480 s. Kenwood. Whether youve been here before or not, come on out, Director of Youth Programs Abby Hymen said.
