Joseph Ziegler, Jr.
Occupation: Executive Director, 18th Ward Community Action Network
Why does he stand out?
Ziegler has volunteered all of his life. For the last 8 years he has been the Executive Director of the 18th Ward Community Action Network (CAN). The 18th Ward CANs mission is, to actively identify issues, assess challenges, develop and implement programs to meet the overall needs that exist within the community and surrounding neighborhoods, Ziegler said.
Under Zieglers leadership and with his active participation, the organization has done many positive things for the 18th Ward including: initiating the 2006 Community Beautification program, donating baseballs to the Hayes Park little league team, hosting candidate forums to familiarize residents with those who seek elective office, feeding hungry families and painting the homes of senior citizens for free.
The husband and father of five believes his work with the 18th Ward CAN inspires residents. People are encouraged to see organizations are still willing to assist in a positive manner, he said. Ziegler says volunteering is manageable for busy people; however, he suggests donating money if a persons time is limited. For those individuals who don't have time, they can always donate money to an organization of their choice to help make a difference, he added.
