Why does he stand out?

A former college basketball player, Washington has been a youth advocate for the past nine years. He is currently the Founder/Executive Director of N.E.R.D Youth Services, Inc. (Nurturing Education Rewarding Determination). N.E.R.D. is a non-profit organization that serves adolescents age 10-18. The organization provides mentoring, tutoring, college visit/tours, financial literacy and study tables.

Washington says the Black community can benefit substantially from volunteerism. Lending your talent to help influence youth is not only gratifying, but youre helping in the process of shaping our future businessmen and women, teachers, doctors, lawyers, and even athletes, he said.

The Purdue University Calumet grad believes his organization has had a positive effect on its youth.

Ive motivated my mentees and students to go to college, mature socially, as well as inspire them to motivate [other] youth ., he said.
