Fundraiser for Thomas
On Thursday evening, a fundraiser to support Alderman Latasha Thomas (17th) re-election campaign was held at Sikia Restaurant, 740 W. 63rd St.
Several elected officials came out to back Ald. Thomas including Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle, State Representative Will Burns (26th) and State Senator Jacqueline Collins (16th).
Ald. Thomas who is being challenged by David Moore for re-election told the sea of supporters who packed the intimate restaurant, Im so thrilled that you all are here today to support me in my re-election for alderman of the mighty 17th Ward, she said
Acknowledging the many community partners who were present including residents and clergy, Thomas said, Over the years, weve done a lot for our community and I couldnt do it without your help.
After the alderman greeted supporters, she turned the microphone over to the elected officials who were present. Sen. Jacqueline Collins addressed the crowd first praising Ald. Thomas leadership record and her fight for education.
We appreciate people who have dedicated their lives and understand the importance of education. I believe that is why [Ald. Thomas] serves as chair of the education committee. She understands how important [education] is, Sen. Collins said.
The state senator continued by saying Ald. Thomas has integrity and has the best interest of the 17th Ward at heart.
Your alderman is definitely someone who works [hard] at her job. She is very committed to the communities that she serves and is an effective member of the City Council, said President Preckwinkle.
State Rep. Will Burns who was recently elected to President Preckwinkles former 4th Ward aldermanic seat also threw his support behind Ald. Thomas
Its clear that we have a challenge to get this thing done on April 5th. People know how to knock on doors, work on the phones.and if you have written a check, maybe you need to add a zero, Rep. Burns said.
The state representative continued by saying Ald. Thomas will continue to fight on behalf on the 17th Ward and is worthy of re-election. We need [Ald. Thomas] leadership and voice in the City Council, Burns said.
