Obama Gets Our Nod for President
Four years ago, no one outsideof Illinois knew much about U.S.Senator Barack Obama. But afterhis stint at the DemocraticNational Convention in 2004 inBoston, everyone wondered whatthe buzz was all about. Since hewas elected in 2004 as U.S.Senator, Obamas political careerhas risen beyond measure and ithas ascended to new heights. Hehas created excitement about thepolitical process and has inspiredan entire generation. In addition,he has run a campaign unlike anyother campaign in American politics.
During this race, an historicevent, the country has alreadychanged. People understand theneed to put aside petty differencesand want to come togetherto fix the ills that have preventedthis country from moving forward. The son of a Kenyan fatherand a White Kansan woman,Obama has helped us to understandwhat Americans can dowhen we come together as a community. At one time, no onewould have dreamed of seeing aBlack man win the nomination tobecome president. And althoughsome may criticize him for notbeing qualified enough to run foroffice, he has shown us that he isready to lead based on his temperament, judgment and the manyoutstanding accomplishments hehas made throughout his life.
Obama has traveled to theMiddle East and Europe tobecome acquainted with worldleaders and has been wellreceived. He has roused supportfrom people everywhere and hasbeen consistent in helping workingfamilies, providing affordableeducation for students, and forhis stance against the Iraq War.The Democratic presidentialnominee has also promised a taxcut for 95 percent of workingfamilies who make less than$250,000 because he feels that inthis economy, raising taxes on themiddle class, is not the answer.
For businesses that create jobshere in the United States, Obamahas also pledged to provide taxincentives so they can continue toprosper. He also promised toinvest $150 billion dollars overthe next decade in affordable, renewable sources of energy, which is an investment that willlead to new industry and five millionnew jobs that pay well andthat cant ever be outsourced.
More recently, Obama calledfor a 90-day moratorium on foreclosuresthat will help people tostay in their homes and voted fora $700 billion bailout plan to helpunlock frozen credit markets.Endorsed by former U.S.Secretary General Colin Powelland U.S. Senator Ted Kennedy,he understands the need to buildcoalitions with people acrossparty lines and reaches out topeople from all backgrounds.
While U.S. Senator JohnMcCain proves to be a worthyopponent, his vice-presidentialpick and his lack of understandingabout the economy greatlyconcerns us right now. McCain, running scared, has nothing elsebetter to say in terms of solvingAmericas problems, but has runa negative campaign, where hehas focused too much on smallissues and not enough on the bigpicture. Instead, Obama offerssolutions to getting America backon track and provides the changewe need, with the right attitude. This will be important asAmerica seeks to rebuild its reputationaround the world duringthis pivotal time in our countryshistory. With that being said, wethink Obama is the changeAmerica needs and the change itdeserves.
