Storm Causes Blackouts in South Suburbs, Restoration Efforts Cost Millions

Lansing, Harvey, Hazel Crest and other neighboring South Suburban areas including Calumet City and Phoenix were hit hard by last week's storm while over 30,000 homes in the area suffered outages. Some areas reported winds as high as 70 to 90 miles per hour, and the National Weather Service confirmed the touchdown of two tornados in Bloomingdale and Bolingbrook.
According to Pam Anton, spokesperson for ComEd, 16,400 homes in Lansing, 7,800 in Harvey and 6,600 homes in Hazel Crest were without power. While most of the outages from the storm were restored, by press time, there were over 100 homes in Chicago and in the South Suburbs still facing outages.
